The Complete Move-Out...

The Complete Move-Out Cleaning Checklist

Moving comes with a seemingly endless list of things to do—packing boxes, changing addresses, organising movers, handing over keys, and somehow finding time to clean an entire home before you leave.

The good news? A plan makes everything easier.

Whether you’re a renter hoping to leave the property in great condition or a homeowner preparing for new occupants, this room-by-room move-out cleaning checklist will help you make sure nothing important gets forgotten.

Before You Start

If possible, save the major cleaning for after most of your belongings have been removed.

An empty home is much easier to clean because you’ll have better access to floors, cupboards, corners, and areas that furniture normally covers.

Gather the supplies you’ll need and work through the home one room at a time.

Whole-Home Cleaning Checklist

Start with the tasks that apply throughout the property:

  • Dust surfaces, shelves, and ledges

  • Wipe doors and door frames

  • Clean light switches and handles

  • Dust skirting boards

  • Remove cobwebs

  • Clean mirrors and glass surfaces

  • Wipe window sills

  • Vacuum carpets

  • Vacuum and mop hard floors

  • Empty bins and remove remaining rubbish

  • Check corners and areas previously covered by furniture

Tip: Clean from top to bottom so you’re not knocking dust onto surfaces you’ve already cleaned.

Kitchen

The kitchen is often one of the biggest jobs during a move-out clean.

Make sure you tackle:

  • Countertops and backsplashes

  • Sink and taps

  • Cabinet and drawer fronts

  • Inside empty cabinets and drawers

  • Hob/stovetop

  • Oven

  • Microwave

  • Extractor hood exterior

  • Refrigerator interior and exterior, where applicable

  • Dishwasher exterior and accessible areas

  • Appliance handles

  • Floors and skirting boards

  • Remaining food, rubbish, or packaging

Pay particular attention to grease and food buildup around cooking areas.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms should be left fresh, clean, and ready for the next occupant.

Clean:

  • Toilet and surrounding areas

  • Bathtub

  • Shower

  • Shower screens or doors

  • Sink and taps

  • Countertops

  • Mirrors

  • Tiles and accessible grout

  • Cabinet exteriors

  • Shelves

  • Fixtures

  • Floors

  • Door handles and switches

Don’t forget to remove any toiletries or personal items left behind.

Bedrooms

Once the furniture and belongings are gone, bedrooms are usually straightforward.

Remember to:

  • Dust shelves and surfaces

  • Wipe wardrobes and closet shelving

  • Clean mirrors

  • Wipe window sills

  • Dust skirting boards

  • Remove marks and dust from accessible surfaces

  • Vacuum carpets

  • Mop hard flooring

  • Check underneath areas where beds and furniture previously sat

Living & Dining Areas

These rooms can hide a surprising amount of dust once the furniture is removed.

Your checklist should include:

  • Dusting all accessible surfaces

  • Cleaning shelves

  • Wiping doors and handles

  • Cleaning window sills

  • Dusting skirting boards

  • Cleaning mirrors

  • Vacuuming carpets

  • Mopping hard floors

  • Checking corners and previously covered areas

Hallways & Entryways

These are some of the highest-traffic areas in a home, so give them a final once-over.

Clean:

  • Floors

  • Skirting boards

  • Doors

  • Handles

  • Light switches

  • Railings where applicable

  • Entry surfaces

  • Mirrors or glass

Don’t Forget These Easy-to-Miss Spots

Before you call the cleaning finished, walk through the property one last time and check:

  • Behind doors

  • Inside cupboards

  • Tops of cabinets

  • Window sills

  • Light switches

  • Door handles

  • Skirting boards

  • Behind and underneath appliances where safely accessible

  • Corners where furniture previously stood

  • Inside wardrobes and closets

These little details can make a big difference to how clean the property feels.

Should You Clean Before or After Moving Your Furniture?

Whenever possible, do your final deep clean after the majority of your furniture and belongings have been removed.

You’ll be able to reach areas that may not have been cleaned in months—or even years.

If your moving schedule doesn’t allow this, clean each room as it becomes empty and leave the floors until the final walkthrough.

Do You Need Professional Move-Out Cleaning?

You can absolutely clean the property yourself, but moving is already a time-consuming process.

Between packing, organising transportation, paperwork, and settling into your new place, cleaning an entire property can quickly become another major task.

Professional move-out cleaning can take one big job off your list and allow you to focus on the move itself.
